Scott De Laruelle, who joined Unified Newspaper Group in 2013, has been promoted to managing editor of the company, which was purchased last year by O’Rourke Media Group and publishes the Verona Press, Oregon Observer, Stoughton Courier Hub and Fitchburg Star. During his tenure, he has served as opinion editor and staff reporter for the four publications, according to the announcement.
De Laruelle earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from UW-Eau Claire in 1998 and his master’s degree in journalism from UW-Madison in 2003.
De Laruelle, of Arlington, has been working in the journalism industry for various newspapers and business-to-business trade publications since 2003.
De Laruelle succeeds Tara Jones, who was named managing editor in December.
The organization also announced the hiring of reporter Maddie Bergstrom, who earned bachelor’s degrees in journalism and psychology from UW-Madison in December 2022. She will cover government and community news for The Verona Press.
A Marinette native, Bergstrom erved as a news reporter and campus news associate editor for The Badger Herald. She also interned as a staff writer and editor for the online publication College Magazine.
