Jim Fitzhenry, former Vice President of News for USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin, has been named editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel‘s Ideas Lab, the newspaper has announced. He’ll also lead the organization’s statewide editorial board and serve as the director of community engagement for the Journal Sentinel and the 10 other Gannett newspapers in Wisconsin.
Prior to serving as VP of News, he served as a senior editor, helping lead major projects such as Kids in Crisis, a multi-year series on youth mental health, and Degrees of Debt, which examined the consequences of the massive student loan debt students incur for higher education.
Fitzhenry earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Marquette University before joining the St. Joseph (Missouri) News Press-Gazette as a reporter. In 1995, he joined the Oshkosh Northwestern, where he served in numerous roles, including special projects reporter, editorial page editor, managing editor and editor.
Fitzhenry succeeds David Haynes, who retired on Dec. 15 after more than four decades in journalism.
