After 33 years in the newspaper business — 22 as editor of the (Prairie du Chien) Courier Press — Ted Pennekamp is retiring, he announced in a column Wednesday.
In his message to readers, Pennekamp thanked Courier Press staff for their efforts over the years to help him “give the readers the news they wanted and needed,” while promoting all that the community had to offer.
He also cited the many changes that have taken place during his tenure with the Press, including the transition to new ownership in 2019, when the paper was sold to Morris Newspaper Corporation following 108 years of ownership by the Howe family. Pennekamp later oversaw the newspaper’s shift from publishing twice a week to once.
Prior to joining the Courier Press, he worked as a reporter and photographer for the (Beaver Dam) Daily Citizen.
Pennekamp’s longtime co-editor, Correne Martin, left the newspaper in August to teach special education English at Prairie du Chien High School. Earlier this month, the Press announced Mellissa R. Collum, a Prairie du Chien resident with a background in academia, has joined the newspaper as an editor.
