The next two weeks are crucial for getting the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA)— a bipartisan bill that would allow news publishers to collectively negotiate with Facebook and Google for fair compensation for the use of their content — over the finish line. The bill is going to markup in the House the last two weeks in July, and we are asking you to help us with a BIG push to get support from as many members of Congress as possible.
What you can do to help
1. Contact your members of Congress. Let them know how important the JCPA is for local news and your organization, and ask them to support this legislation ahead of the markup.
The News Media Alliance has just released an updated national JCPA Fact Sheet, in addition to the state-specific JCPA Fact Sheets for you to use when talking to your members of Congress about the need to pass the Journalism Competition & Preservation Act (JCPA).
2. Tell your readers. In an effort to make a big impact, the News Media Alliance has created print and digital ads for news publishers to run encouraging readers to support local journalism by asking their members of Congress to co-sponsor the JCPA.
3. Publish an editorial. Consider running an editorial in your publication encouraging your local members of Congress to support this important legislation that will level the playing field and give news publishers of all sizes – especially small, local publishers – a chance to get the compensation they deserve from the dominant tech platforms. Here’s a sample editorial and an op-ed made available for publication by News Media Alliance President & CEO David Chavern.
