Photographer Thomas Walter Dorman dies at 70

Thomas (Tom) Walter Dorman, a former newspaper reporter, sportswriter and photographer, died on Sunday, May 15, 2022. He was 70. He died doing what he loved and “was out photographing the full lunar eclipse when his coronary heart stopped,” according to his obituary.

Dorman was born on Aug. 12, 1951, in Madison to Roy and Jeanette (Ripp) Dorman. He graduated from Waunakee High School in 1969 and received his journalism degree from UW-Madison in 1974.

He discovered his love of photography through working in community newspapers and never went anywhere without a camera. Dorman considered himself a “street photographer,” taking pictures of everyday people and events.

In his early 40s, he enrolled at Southwest Wisconsin Technical School and graduated with a degree in computer programming. After 22 years as a programmer for the Wisconsin Court System, he retired in 2015.

A memorial service was held on May 25 at Gunderson East Funeral and Cremation Care in Madison. Family and friends who wish to view the service may do so here.
