Washington Post’s Jessica Contrera wins 2022 Shadid Award

Jessica Contrera of The Washington Post is the winner of the 2022 Anthony Shadid Award for Journalism Ethics, the Center for Journalism Ethics at UW-Madison announced Tuesday.

Contrera earned the award for her stories on child sex trafficking in the U.S. She will accept the award May 17 during a ceremony at the University Club in New York City. The ceremony also will include a conversation on journalism ethics with NBC’s Lester Holt and award-winning journalist and author David Maraniss.

The other 2022 finalists were:

  • Ali Fowle, Drew Ambrose, Aun Qi Koh, Andy Mees, David Boyle, Jenni Henderson, Nick Olle, Liz Gooch and Sharon Roobol; Al Jazeera (101 East).
  • A.J. Lagoe, Brandon Stahl, Steve Eckert, Gary Knox; KARE 11, Minneapolis.
  • Jesse Eisinger, Jeff Ernsthausen, Paul Kiel, Justin Elliott, James Bandler, Patricia Callahan, Robert Faturechi, Ellis Simani, Doris Burke, Agnes Chang and Lucas Waldron; ProPublica.

The Shadid Award is named for UW-Madison journalism alumnus Anthony Shadid, who died in February 2012 while reporting in Syria. The award honors journalists who exhibit a strong commitment to ethical journalism by acting with integrity, honoring ethical principles in their reporting or resisting pressure to compromise ethical principles.
