Nominations for the Gish Award for courage, integrity and tenacity in rural journalism are now being accepted, the Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues announced last week.
The deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, April 1. Nominations should be emailed to Institute Director Al Cross at al.cross@uky.edu and should include a detailed letter explaining how the nominee shows courage, tenacity and integrity, as well as any documentation of the same.
The Gish Award is named for Tom and Pat Gish, former publishers of The Mountain Eagle in Whitesburg, Ky., for 52 years. During their tenure as publishers, they exemplified the characteristics recognized by the award, withstanding advertiser boycotts, business competitions, declining populations, personal attacks and even the burning of their office.

The Institute seeks nominations that are on par — at least in some major ways — with the Gishes and other winners. A full list of past winners is available here.
