Murray Cohen, owner of three Wisconsin weeklies, dies at 92

Murray Cohen, who owned the Delphos Herald newspaper group that includes three Wisconsin newspapers, died Tuesday, Dec. 7. He was 92.

Cohen was born Aug. 30, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Ethel (Nassofer) and Nathan Cohen. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York and Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky. Cohen went on to earn his master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri.

In 1962, Cohen purchased his first newspaper, The Delphos Herald, a weekly publication in northwestern Ohio. Over time, he went on to buy more than a dozen weekly newspapers in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.

In Wisconsin, Cohen’s group owns the Vilas County News-Review in Eagle River, the Waushara Argus in Wautoma and The Three Lakes News.

Cohen was passionate about the community newspaper business and was active for many years in the former Inland Press Association, now known as America’s Newspapers.

He was married to his wife, Barbara Safran Cohen, for 29 years. Cohen had two daughters — Roberta and Jennifer — a stepson, Jared, and five grandchildren.
