Newspapers sought to host 2022 summer interns

The application period for newspapers interested in hosting an intern during the summer of 2022 is now open. The deadline to apply is Sunday, Nov. 28.

In an effort to provide students and newspapers with a more valuable experience, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation board of directors recently voted to change the length and application process for its summer internship program.

Funding changes

Beginning in 2022, internships will be extended from eight to 12 weeks. With the change, the following changes also will go into effect: the stipend provided by the WNA Foundation will increase from $2,000 to $3,000 and the newspaper matching fund requirement will be $1,800, up from $1,200.

Application changes

In an effort to best match students with newspapers — and to increase the percentage of candidates for newspapers in less populous areas of the state — the board also approved changes to the application process.

The call for host newspapers will now go out in the fall, and newspapers will be selected before students are invited to apply. Therefore, students will be able to apply for internships at specific locations across the state.

The WNA Foundation will begin accepting student applications during the first week of December. Final candidates will be notified by early March.
