Former publisher, WNAF president George Althoff to lead Baraboo Chamber of Commerce

George Althoff, former newspaper publisher and past president of the WNA Foundation, has been named executive director of the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce, the Baraboo News Republic reports.

A Wisconsin native and UW-La Crosse graduate, Althoff previously served as a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors from 2010 to 2018. He also was board president for two years.

Althoff served as WNA Foundation president in 2009, during his 14-year run as a publisher for Lee Enterprises. He led the Winona (Minn.) Daily News from 1997 to 2004 before returning to Wisconsin. Althoff was publisher from 2004 to 2011 of the Portage division of Capital Newspapers, which includes the News Republic, Portage Daily Register, the Juneau County Star-Times in Mauston, and Wisconsin Dells Events.

Following his time in newspapers, Althoff worked as communications director for three state agencies. He held the role twice for the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions, from August 2011 to December 2015 and April 2016 to June 2018. He also was communications director for the Department of Natural Resources from December 2015 to April 2016 and the Department of Workforce Development from June 2018 to January 2019.
