Alan Goldsmith, whose family owned Boscobel Dial for decades, dies at 76

Alan C. D. Goldsmith, who worked in the family newspaper business at The Boscobel Dial, died Sunday, Sept. 12, at his home in Kenosha. He was 76.

Born Aug. 1, 1945, in Ladysmith, he was the son of Ralph D. and Lois A. (Walter) Goldsmith. He graduated from Boscobel High School in 1963 before joining the U.S. Air Force.

While growing up, Goldsmith worked at The Dial, which his parents owned from 1956 to 1992. Both are members of the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame, with Ralph Goldsmith having been inducted in 2005 and Lois Goldsmith joining him in 2011.

Following his military service in Turkey, Goldsmith earned his bachelor of fine arts degree from UW-Milwaukee and went on to earn his master of fine arts degree from UW-Madison.

He continued to work for The Dial as he went on to a career in higher education. Goldsmith taught at UW-Richland, Mount Senario College and UW-Parkside. He taught graphic design, web design, package design, typography, digital photography and computer illustration. Goldsmith also served as art department chair for three years at UW-Parkside.

A celebration of life is planned for a later date.
