Melissa Thorud is the Pierce County Journal‘s newest reporter, the Ellsworth newspaper announced Thursday.
A 2021 UW-River Falls graduate, Thorud earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in political science. She started with The Journal on June 23, just over seven weeks removed from graduation.
While in college, Thorud reported for the Student Voice and served as editor of the newspaper for two years. Her work earned third place honors for Breaking News Reporting in the 2020 WNA Foundation Collegiate Better Newspaper Contest.

Thorud grew up in White Bear Lake, Minn. She attended Mahtomedi High School, where her interest in journalism began with the school newspaper.
