After eight years with The Cap Times, city editor Jason Joyce is leaving to become publisher of another Madison newspaper, Isthmus, he announced this week on social media.
Joyce joined The Cap Times in 2013 as news editor and became city editor in 2019. In addition to his editing duties, Joyce also wrote occasional sports columns, for which he earned first place honors in the 2020 WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest.
A 1992 UW-Madison graduate, Joyce has remained in Madison for his entire professional career. Prior to joining The Cap Times, he served as Isthmus digital media director for nearly 15 years. He also wrote a weekly sports column.
Joyce worked for just under five years as a web projects administrator for the University Book Store prior to his time in newspapers. He also served as editor-in-chief of The Badger Herald student newspaper while in college.
Isthmus returns to print
The addition of Joyce as publisher is just one of several changes this summer at Isthmus. The newspaper announced last month it would be returning to print for the first time since the early days of the pandemic.
Isthmus‘ first print edition in more than 500 days will be published Aug. 5, available for free in Madison-area grocery and retail stores. Published weekly prior to its print shutdown on March 19, 2020, the new Isthmus print edition will be available on the first Thursday of every month.
Coinciding with the announcement of its return to print, Isthmus also rolled out a new membership program last month. Readers who sign up for the program receive exclusive access to members-only newsletters and events while supporting local journalism.
Membership has two levels — Monona and Mendota, named for the two lakes that form Madison’s isthmus — and can be paid monthly or annually. Monona members pay $120 per year or $12 monthly, and Mendota members pay $700 annually or $70 per month.
