Du Charme, former editor of the Wonewoc Reporter, dies at 92

Bernece Ardis Degner Du Charme, who worked nearly 30 years for The Wonewoc Reporter, died Saturday, April 17, at her home in Hillsboro. She was 92 and had been diagnosed last month with cancer.

Born Sept. 11, 1928, in Mauston, she was the daughter of Edward and Tena (Roloff) Borrmann. She graduated from Wonewoc High School in 1946.

Bernece Borrmann and Laurence Degner were married Aug. 9, 1947, at St. Paul Evangelical Church in Hillsboro. Together they raised five children and were married 44 years until Laurence’s death in January 1992.

The Degners farmed at their Wonewoc home, and from 1967 until her retirement in 1994, Bernece also worked for The Wonewoc Reporter. The Juneau County weekly newspaper merged with the Elroy Keystone around 1990, before printing its last issue in 1999.

On April 20, 1993, she married Robert Du Charme in Holiday, Fla. They were married 11 years until Robert’s death in May 2004.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 24, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hillsboro. Memorials in Du Charme’s name may be made to the church or to the Scenic Hills HOPE cancer foundation.
