JANESVILLE – Sid Schwartz, editor of The Gazette and regional editor for Adams Publishing Group, will retire next month, the Janesville newspaper announced Thursday.
Schwartz has led The Gazette newsroom for the past six years, and last year added regional editor responsibilities for APG, overseeing its southern Wisconsin newspapers. He also took over in November as editor of the Beloit Daily News following the retirement of longtime editor Bill Barth.
The decision to retire came following the death of Schwartz’s wife, Julie, in February after a long illness. Schwartz said in The Gazette story it was “completely his decision to retire” and that the newspaper and its parent company have been supportive during this difficult time.

A Reedsburg native, Schwartz earned his journalism degree from UW-Eau Claire in 1984 and started his career as editor of the Vernon County Broadcast-Censor in Viroqua. He took a reporting job at the Beloit Daily News in 1986 and went on to serve as city editor before joining The Gazette in 1990.
Schwartz spent the remaining 30 years of his career with The Gazette, first as a reporter and later as news editor and editor. After taking over the newsroom’s top role in March 2015, Schwartz helped guide The Gazette to six consecutive Daily Newspaper of the Year honors in the WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest from 2015 through 2020.
