Andrew “Andy” Thompson, who worked nearly 40 years for The (Appleton) Post-Crescent, died Monday, March 8, at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. He was 63 and had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for longstanding health issues.
Born Dec. 21, 1957, to Don and Dorothy Thompson, Thompson grew up in Clintonville, about 40 miles northwest of Appleton. While in high school, he wrote a weekly sports column for the Clintonville Tribune-Gazette.
Thompson attended Marquette University, graduating in 1980 with his bachelor’s degree in journalism. In the early years of his career, he spent brief stints with the Marinette Eagle-Star and Oshkosh Daily Northwestern.
In May 1981, Thompson took a job reporting on his hometown for The Post-Crescent. Thompson had been the newspaper’s Clintonville reporter in the summer of 1978 before returning to school for his junior year.
Thompson remained with The Post-Crescent for the remainder of his career. He served in a number of reporting and editing roles over nearly 40 years with the paper, most recently as a content coach for the newsroom.

On Jan. 8, 1983, Thompson married Laurie Holmes. They had two children together, Jon and Bobby.
Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at Beil-Didier Funeral Home in Clintonville. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m.
