Lowell Georgia, an award-winning newspaper photographer and Green Bay native, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, Colo. He was 87.
Georgia was born March 19, 1933, in Green Bay. He grew up in the city and started his photography career at the Green Bay Press-Gazette while still in high school.
He also met his future wife, Mary Kay Donovan, while working at the newspaper. They married on Oct. 27, 1956, in Green Bay and raised six children together.
Georgia worked for the Press-Gazette from 1949 to 1960. During that time, he was named Wisconsin Press Photographer of the Year in 1959 and was honored by the Inland Newspaper Association in 1960.

He left Green Bay for the Denver Post, where he worked from 1960 to 1967. He was named photographer of the year by the National Press Photographers Association in 1963. Following his time at the Post, Georgia spent a year in Washington D.C. as a “picture editor” for the National Geographic Society.
Georgia finished his career back in Colorado, doing freelance work, including assignments for National Geographic.
