NEW YORK – Seven Wisconsin newsrooms have been selected to be among the hosts for more than 300 journalists in the 2021 class of Report for America, the national service program announced Tuesday.
It’s another record-setting class for Report for America, which this year added more than 100 new reporting positions. The program hopes to continue growing each year, with a goal of placing 1,000 journalists into local newsrooms by 2024.
Report for America, which is an initiative of The GroundTruth Project, is a two-year program (with an option for three) that delivers a wide-range of benefits to its corps members. Beyond paying up to half of the journalists’ salaries, it provides ongoing training and mentorship by leading journalists, peer networking, and memberships to select professional organizations.

Wisconsin newsrooms selected for 2021 include five WNA members — Green Bay Press-Gazette, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wausau Daily Herald, Wausau Pilot & Review and Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism. Also selected were Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service and Spectrum Milwaukee. A full list of host newsrooms and their beats is available here.
The Pilot & Review is one 64 new host newsrooms this year. Its reporter will cover the Hmong community and other immigrants in Marathon County. Coverage areas for other Wisconsin newsrooms are as follows:
- Green Bay Press-Gazette: Native American issues in Green Bay and Wisconsin
- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (two positions): Latino neighborhoods on the city’s south side; Native American and other under-covered communities
- Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service: Community reporting, two positions
- Spectrum Milwaukee: Public health coverage in Milwaukee
- Wausau Daily Herald: Population loss and its effects in Wisconsin
