Steven Ray, who worked nearly two decades in The Capital Times newsroom, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, at an assisted living facility in Middleton. He was 70.

Ray was born Nov. 12, 1950, in St. Paul, Minn., to William Lewis and George Ann (Frederick) Ray.

His early career in journalism took Ray to newspapers in Green Bay and Monroe, as well as Iron Mountain, Mich., and two stops in Iowa, Keokuk and Davenport. Ray worked in several roles, including as a sportswriter, news reporter and copy editor.

He moved to Madison in 1989 to join The Cap Times newsroom, where he served as wire news editor for many years. His 19-year run with the newspaper ended in 2008, coinciding with the newspaper’s move away from daily print publication.

Ray was married for nearly 20 years and remained close with his former wife, Sheryl Voita. Together they had two children, Katie and Dan.

A celebration of Ray’s life will be held after pandemic-imposed restrictions are lifted.
