Born April 24, 1940, in Utica, N.Y., Kendrick was the only daughter of Dr. T. Douglas and Irene T. Kendrick. She had one brother, Douglas W. Kendrick, who died of cancer in his young adult years.

Kendrick graduated in 1962 from what was then known as Utica College of Syracuse University, earning an associate degree in office management and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. She went on to earn her master’s degree in journalism in 1965 from UW-Madison.

Hired by then-city editor Elliott Maraniss, Kendrick joined The Capital Times staff as a city hall reporter in September 1967. She moved in 1984 to the copy desk, where her sharp editing skills earned her the role of copy chief. Kendrick remained with the newspaper until her retirement in 2005.

Memorial donations in Kendrick’s name may be made to The Evjue Foundation or the Maggie Fund at the Dane County Humane Society.
