J. David Ingles, a former journalist and longtime Waukesha resident, died near his home Sunday, Oct. 4, after a brief illness. He was 79.
Ingles grew up in Homewood, Ill., and Dearborn, Mich., during which time he inherited his father’s interest in trains and railroads. After graduating from college, Ingles started his journalism career as a newspaper reporter in central Illinois.
On Sept. 25, 1971, he married Carol Coon in Belvidere, Ill. Together they had a daughter, Susan, and two grandsons, Carson and Sam.

That same year, they moved to Wisconsin as Ingles joined the staff of Trains magazine. He went on to serve on the staff of four magazines during a 47-year career. Ingles held the role of editor-in-chief for Trains and Trains Illustrated, and at the time of his retirement in 2018, he was editor of Classic Trains.
Ingles’ interest in trains also extended to his free time, as he rode passenger trains across the U.S. and Canada, adding to his extensive railroad photo collection. He also attended bi-weekly gatherings of Waukesha-area train enthusiasts for nearly 50 years.
Visitation will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at Church and Chapel Funeral Home, 380 Bluemound Road, Waukesha. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m.
