Wisconsin newspapers recognize World Homeless Day

As a follow up to last year’s Homelessness in Wisconsin project, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association last week partnered with several member newspapers to recognize World Homeless Day on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The effort shined a light on homelessness in the state as the pandemic continues to exacerbate an already troubling issue. Leading the way on the project were the Wisconsin State Journal and Multi Media Channels, with additional content contributed by the (Eau Claire) Leader-Telegram and The Cap Times of Madison.

State Journal reporter Dean Mosiman again authored the project’s lead story, a look at the current situation in Madison, where advocates are asking city leaders to take steps to protect the homeless before cold weather sets in. The State Journal also contributed several photos of homeless encampments in Madison parks as well as an editorial urging state leaders to release funds designated for helping the homeless.

MMC newspapers added additional perspectives through several stories, including one on homelessness in Wausau and central Wisconsin, a look at how the pandemic has affected homeless warming shelters and a snapshot of how homelessness is affecting students in the Green Bay area.

The WNA facilitated the statewide distribution of the content to its nearly 200 member newspapers.
