MONROE — After three years in what Emily Massingill described as her “dream job,” Friday was her last day as editor of The Monroe Times.

She announced her departure and said goodbye to readers in a column Saturday. Massingill did not specify what was next for her, but called leaving the Times “one of the hardest decisions I’ve made in my career.”

Massingill started at the Times as an intern and later did freelance work for the newspaper while her children were young. Prior to her years as a freelance writer, Massingill served as editor of The Gazette in Pecatonica, Ill., and spent time as a reporter for the (Darlington) Republican Journal, The Platteville Journal and the (Cuba City) Tri-County Press.

She returned to the Times three years ago as editor. Under her leadership, the newspaper was recognized as the best in its circulation division in the 2018 WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest.
