MADISON — Vanessa Swales, a former New York Times reporting fellow, has joined Wisconsin Watch as an investigative reporter, the non-profit newsroom announced Wednesday.
Swales, a Los Angeles native who moved to England at age 9, is British-American-Iranian and fluent in Spanish. In its announcement, Wisconsin Watch noted her multilingual ability and data analysis skills would expand its investigative capacity. She will formally begin her role with Wisconsin Watch on Aug. 1, and will be based in Milwaukee.

During her year at the Times, Swales covered a variety of topics, including race, impeachment, coronavirus, gender and sexuality. Prior to taking on that role, she served as an investigative intern for NBC News. She also has worked as a reporter and researcher for Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting and as a reporter in southern Spain for SUR in English.
Swales earned her bachelor’s degree from Royal Holloway, University of London, where she studied English literature and Spanish. She went on to receive her master’s degree at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York.
