Greschner’s retirement comes just weeks shy of his 42nd anniversary as sports editor. He took over the role on Aug. 9, 1978, and has guided the newspaper’s sports section ever since.

A graduate of Prairie Farm High School, Greschner went on to earn his journalism degree at UW-Eau Claire. He worked as an intern for The Chronotype in August 1975, the final summer before he graduated. Skipping his graduation ceremony to pack up for the move to Rice Lake, he started his first full-time stint at The Chronotype on Dec. 22, 1975.

After 18 months on the job, Greschner grew restless and left the newspaper. He continued to contribute freelance photos and stories to The Chronotype over the next year while working on his parents’ farm and traveling with friends. In summer 1978, publisher Warren Leary asked Greschner to return as sports editor.

Greschner said in his column that he hopes to continue to contribute occasional freelance work to The Chronotype, while also starting a blog at davegreschneroutdoorjournal.org.
