RIPON — Wisconsin Media Group has purchased the Sheboygan Sun, the group announced Thursday.
Formerly known as Delta Media Group, the company also owns the Ripon Commonwealth Press and the (Kiel) Tri-County News. The Sun is a community shopper newspaper started in 1999 by Mike Walton Jr., and his father, Mike Walton Sr.

“The Sheboygan Sun is a perfect fit with our current markets in Wisconsin,” group owner and CEO Jim O’Rourke said in the announcement. “We’re looking forward to serving and supporting local businesses and readers in Sheboygan County, and we’re thankful that Mike Walton has extended this opportunity to our company.”
Wisconsin Media Group general manager Joe Mathes will oversee the Sun. All current Sun employees will be retained and Walton Jr. will work with Mathes during the transition. The Sun, which has not published since March 19 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. expects to “relaunch” June 9, according to the announcement, with its Sheboygan office reopening June 1.
