The WNA Foundation on Monday celebrated Wisconsin’s outstanding student journalists, announcing the winners in its 2019 college and high school Better Newspaper Contests.
All awards were mailed to the student newspapers due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of our Student Honors Luncheon and local high school awards ceremonies. The WNA Foundation looks forward to celebrating in person with our state’s fantastic student journalists again soon.
The 2019 WNAF Collegiate Better Newspaper Contest featured 318 entries from 14 campus newspapers across 20 categories. Arches, Mount Mary College’s student publication, took home top honors in General Excellence.
Collegiate Journalist of the Year went to Natallie St. Onge, a junior at Marquette University who served as managing editor of the Marquette Tribune.
The 2019 High School Better Newspaper Contest featured 79 entries from seven student newspapers across 13 categories.
Cardinal Columns (Fond du Lac High School), The Lance (La Follette High School) and The Viking Voice (Gibraltar High School) received the top three honors in General Excellence. The schools’ journalism programs each will receive a $1,000 Branen Scholarship along with the awards.
