Marlys Taege Moberg (nee Schmidt), a former Wisconsin newspaper journalist and author, died Wednesday, March 18, in Wauwatosa. She was 91.
Marlys was born March 21, 1928, in Millbank, S.D., to Daniel A. Schmidt, Jr., and L. Irene (Hoy) Schmidt. She grew up in Janesville and graduated from Custer High School in Milwaukee, valedictorian of the Class of 1946. She went on to earn her journalism degree from Marquette University, graduating in 1950.
Marlys was married to Jack Taege, who died in August 1973. Together they had three children, Linda, Lauren and James. She later married David O. Moberg and was a second mother to his four children, Lynette, Paul, Jon and Phil.

Before spending much of her career working for a number of Lutheran women’s groups, Taege-Moberg held several journalism jobs. She taught English and journalism at Barron High School, served as a correspondent for the Lake Country Reporter in Hartland, was home section editor at the Waukesha Daily Freeman, and served as editor-in-chief of the Badger Lutheran newspaper in Milwaukee.
She also served as editor-in-chief of the Lutheran Women’s Quarterly and was the first public relations director for the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Taege-Moberg in 1994 was the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from Concordia University Wisconsin. She was one of the first women to serve on the national board of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod.
Taege-Moberg was the author of nine books, including “God Gave the Increase,” “Women In League With the Lord,” and “The Heart of Jesus: Women in the Gospel of Luke.”
A celebration of life service for Taege-Moberg will be held at a later date.
