Blum was born Sept. 16, 1931, in Madison to Dr. Otto and Elsie Blum. He grew up in Florida and Wisconsin, graduating from Waverly High School in 1950 and earning his journalism degree from the University of Miami.

After starting his career in Florida, including a stint with the Tampa Times, Blum returned to Wisconsin in 1967, when he joined the La Crosse Tribune. Blum spent the next 28 years with the newspaper until retiring in 1995.

Blum was well known in the La Crosse community for his role as an investigative reporter. His obituary describes Blum as a “reporter’s reporter” with a passion for the truth that could have made him the city’s version of Woodward and Bernstein.

On July 5, 1970, Blum married his wife, Doris, in New Glarus. They loved to travel together and rarely spent a day apart during their 45 years of marriage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services in La Crosse. Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 9 a.m.
