Howard Fibich, who spent most of his nearly 40-year journalism career with The Milwaukee Journal, died Feb. 26 in Brookfield. He was 88.
Born Jan. 6, 1932, in Oak Park, Ill., Fibich was raised in Chicago, where he attended Schurz High School. He went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism at Northwestern University.

After college, Fibich’s first job was with the Kokomo (Ind.) Tribune. After nearly two years there, Fibich joined the staff of The Journal in 1956 as a copy editor.
Over his 37 years with the newspaper, Fibich rose through the editing ranks, from the copy desk to news editor to eventually retiring as deputy managing editor in 1993. Fibich spent more than a decade as news editor and was a mentor to two generations of Milwaukee journalists.
During his college years, Fibich spent summers as a lifeguard in Lake Geneva. There he met his future wife, Carrol Jean Anderson. They were married June 5, 1954, and together they had two daughters, one son, and four grandchildren.
No funeral service is planned for Fibich, per his wishes.
