This year’s conference, titled “Journalism Ethics and the Crisis in Local News,” is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24, at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. The Wisconsin Newspaper Association is among the sponsors for the conference, which is free and open to the public.

Wisconsin college students and advisors interested in attending the conference may have their travel costs reimbursed up to $200 thanks to travel sponsorships by the WNA and Wisconsin Broadcasters Association. A breakout session during lunch also will offer students more information about the master’s degree program in the UW-Madison School of Journalism & Mass Communication.

The conference will bring together news media professionals, non-profit news leaders, media innovators, academics, students and the public to address the current crisis in local journalism with special attention to media ethics. Among the panelists are Milwaukee Journal Sentinel investigative reporter Raquel Rutledge, New York Times national correspondent Julie Bosman and Stephanie Edgerly, associate professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

Panel topics include “Ethics in Local Contexts,” “Ethics & Economics,” “Partisans, Polarization & The Public,” and “Innovations & The Way Forward.” The conference will conclude with a keynote conversation with Mindy Marques Gonzalez, publisher and executive editor of the Miami Herald Media Company.
