Longtime Fond du Lac journalist Anthony Leon dies at 82

Anthony “Tony” Leon, an award-winning journalist who spent his entire career at The Reporter in Fond du Lac, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, in Fond du Lac. He was 82.

Leon was born May 20, 1937, to John C. and Mary (Socorro) Leon in Aurora, Ill. He graduated from Marmion Military Academy before earning his bachelor’s degree from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa. He also did graduate work at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

While serving in the U.S. Army in Atlanta, Leon met his future wife, Anita Byram. Anthony and Anita were married on May 20, 1961, at Sacred Heart Church in Atlanta. Together they had four children and five grandchildren.

Leon worked for 36 years at The Reporter before retiring in 2001. Over the course of his career, Leon held several roles, including reporter, columnist, city editor and editorial page editor. He also served as President of the Fox Valley-Lakeshore Press Association.

Funeral services are set for Saturday, Dec. 21, at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, 524 N. Park Ave., Fond du Lac. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, with a short remembrance, military honors and luncheon to follow.
