IRONWOOD, Mich. – The Daily Globe in Ironwood, Mich., celebrated its 100th anniversary this week, publishing a commemorative edition featuring historic front pages and hosting an open house at the newspaper offices.
The newspaper, which serves the western end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Iron County, Wis., printed its first issue on Nov. 20, 1919. The 16-page evening edition called the Ironwood Daily Globe cost 5 cents per copy. The newspaper was founded by Frank E. Noyes, who also was editor and publisher of the Eagle-Star in Marinette.
The front page of the inaugural Daily Globe was one of several historic front pages included in Monday’s commemorative edition. Other historic headlines reprinted Monday included the Pearl Harbor bombing, President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the 1969 moon landing, and the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The Daily Globe, which is a member of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, also hosted an open house Wednesday to celebrate with the Ironwood community. Readers were invited to attend the event, which included refreshments, door prizes and the opportunity to watch the press run.
