Daily Union, Hometown News adding digital paywall

FORT ATKINSON – Beginning Oct. 1, readers of the Daily Jefferson County Union in Fort Atkinson and other Hometown News Group newspapers will need a subscription to access digital content.

Daily Union editor Christine Spangler announced on Thursday plans for a paywall. In addition to explaining the need to charge for content, Spangler noted the Daily Union planned to expand its digital offerings. Rather than only post select stories online, nearly everything that appears in print will now be posted to its website, in addition to special digital-only content.

The new subscription-based model will allow one-day access for $1 or $10 per month for unlimited access. The paywall mirrors the one added in April by the (Eau Claire) Leader-Telegram. Adams Publishing Group owns the Leader-Telegram and all Hometown News Group papers.

Readers who do not subscribe will be able to access world and national news, as well as college and professional sports, for free. Some local stories selected as an “Editor’s Pick” also will be available outside the paywall.
