STEVENS POINT – Last week marked 20 years since the Portage County Gazette printed the first edition of its revived weekly newspaper.

With roots dating back to 1878, the original incarnation of the Gazette printed its final issue on March 21, 1923. More than 76 years later, a group of former Stevens Point Journal owners and employees printed the Gazette again on July 2, 1999.
The goal of that group was simple: to provide news to Portage County residents at a lower cost with a greater emphasis on local coverage. Now a part of Multi Media Channels, the Gazette continues to keep a local focus on the people and events in Portage County.
