PORTAGE – As she prepared to retire from the Portage Daily Register, reporter Lyn Jerde offered one tip to her eventual successor: Have fun on the job.
Jerde is retiring after 11 years at the Daily Register, during which time she covered a wide array on topics for the newspaper. In her farewell column Thursday, Jerde reflected on some of the most memorable moments.
One of those came just last month, when Jerde participated in The Bulldog Stomp, a 5K cancer run-walk she had reported on in previous years. This year, Jerde became a participant following a March diagnosis with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer.
In the column, Jerde also acknowledged the role cancer has played in her life over the last few months. After nearly 40 years in community journalism, retirement is “not an entirely happy occasion” for Jerde.
