Madison schools test limits of open government with private meetings

MADISON – Individually or in pairs, Madison School Board members spend hours each year in private meetings with Superintendent Jennifer Cheatham, discussing matters soon to come before the full board, writes Wisconsin State Journal reporter Chris Rickert.

Current and former school board members have recently questioned the practice and recent guidance from the state attorney general’s office cautions that such gatherings risk running afoul of the state’s open meetings law.
