Merrill citizens rally to recall 5 city council members

WASAU – A week after a group of Merrill citizens filed recall papers for five of eight city council members accused of not protecting the interests of constituents, about 50 people gathered for a recall rally, Laura Schulte of the Wausau Daily Herald reported.

The group alleges the council members have failed the city on multiple occasions by not protecting the interests of constituents, ignoring errors made by city staffers, continuing to violate state open meetings laws and failing to follow city ordinances in the acquisition of property, among other reasons.

According to the recall papers, the council members’ violations of open meetings laws included engaging in walking quorums, neglecting to properly publish meeting notices and allowing council members to participate in meetings of committees they’re not appointed to serve.
