Sauk County records lawsuit remains unresolved

BARABOO – Despite a motion seeking to appeal a judge’s decision in a Sauk County public records lawsuit, officials remain undecided about how they will proceed in the case, the Baraboo New Republic reported.

An attorney hired by the county’s insurance company filed the petition to appeal on Dec. 28 — the filing deadline — without consulting the executive committee, which is typical practice.

Sauk County Board Chairman Peter Vedro told the newspaper that the holidays made it was impossible to run the decision through the usual channels, so he and county staff authorized the filing as a placeholder.

A Green Lake County judge on Dec. 14 ordered the county to release records sought by the Baraboo News Republic related to the death of a man on government-condemned land. The newspaper sued for access in 2017.

The committee plans to discuss the issue on Friday, after representatives for the county and newspaper have had a chance to begin talks of a potential settlement.
