Stephenson, who started at the Milwaukee Sentinel in 1987, will be honored at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Newsroom Pub, 137 East Wells Street in Milwaukee. In his three decades at the newspaper, Stephenson has won numerous awards, including three Casey medals for Meritorious Journalism and two Eugene S. Pulliam National Journalism Writing Awards.

WISN-TV in Milwaukee recently profiled Stephenson and his battle with vision loss. The condition, which is similar to macular degeneration, started affecting Stephenson about two years ago.

Stephenson has continued to work at the Journal Sentinel despite the condition, albeit with some changes. He has been forced to take the bus or carpool to work, where he uses a modified keyboard, magnifying glass, oversized monitor and special lights to read and type. Stephenson’s condition also inspired his weekly column called “Better Angels,” in which he writes about decency, kindness and compassion in Milwaukee.

The event honoring Stephenson is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required.
