USPS won’t reimburse residents for missing mail claims

NEENAH – Residents whose recent bill payments went undelivered will not be reimbursed for bank charges or other fees, according to a letter sent to postal customers inquiring about missing mail.

“I must inform you that the United States Postal Service will not be able to honor claims for reimbursement,” District Manager Deborah Woodrum wrote in the letter obtained by USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin.

“Federal law 28 U.S.C. 2680(b) exempts the Postal Service from liability for claims arising out of the loss, miscarriage, or negligent delivery of mail matter, except where insurance is either included in the postage or additional insurance is purchased.”

Woodrum apologized to customers and advised they retain and share her letter with correspondents “to document this event as necessary,” Duke Behnke of The (Appleton) Post-Crescent reported this week.

The missing mail was picked up from the Neenah Post Office on Sept. 4 but not delivered, according to Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert.
