AUSTIN, Texas – The American Society of News Editors and Associated Press Media Editors agreed to merge Tuesday, forming the News Leaders Association.
ASNE and APME have worked closely for years and will continue to do so as the merger process is completed. NLA is expected to be in place by Sept. 9-10, 2019, when it hosts the News Leadership Conference in New Orleans.
George Stanley, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editor and current ASNE secretary, will be the first NLA vice president. Michael Days, the current APME secretary, will be NLA president.
NLA’s mission statement reads: “The News Leaders Association is committed to leading, nurturing and serving journalism and democracy.”
In a Q&A on the ASNE website, NLA says it will:
- Advocate for the values of a free press and free speech, and engage local communities on the value of credible news.
- Nurture news leaders and develop rising generations of journalists from diverse backgrounds to succeed today and lead tomorrow.
- Serve newsrooms and the public by maintaining the highest standards of credible, ethical and independent journalism across platforms.
