Congressional candidate faces criticism over involvement in records lawsuit

Congressional candidate Cathy Myers is facing scrutiny about her conduct as a Janesville School Board member during a bitter, two-year fight over district records, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Critics say the case presented a clear conflict for Myers.

Records show Myers forwarded several school board-related emails to her then-boyfriend, Roger Merry, while a lawsuit brought by Dennis Hughes, their friend who had lived with them in their large Janesville home, Mary Spicuzza and Daniel Bice reported. Hughes is now Myers’ campaign manager.

Hughes eventually won the records case and was awarded a $15,000 settlement agreement. The money still sits in a trust account overseen by Merry, who has declined to turn over the cash to Hughes, arguing the money is owed to him for legal fees. Merry and Myers are no longer together.
