Robert Wright

(Montello) Marquette County Tribune
Inducted: 2006

Robert Wright was the long-time owner, publisher and editor of the Marquette County Tribune in Montello. He served as 1973-74 president of the Wisconsin Press Association shortly before it merged with the Wisconsin Daily League to become WNA.

Born in New York City, he spent summers in Wisconsin where his grandmother owned the Waupun weekly newspaper. Publisher and editor of the Marquette County Tribune from 1950 to 1980, he received the Distinguished Service Award in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin in1980. He died in 1984.

Bob described himself as a “good-natured cynic” who has “a hard time taking anything serious” as evidenced in his regular weekly column entitled “I’d Rather be Wright.” His humor pieces and weekly nature column were written in moments he could steal from duties as publisher, and Montello residents knew Wright as a community sparkplug. They laughed alongside him when Bob once observed, “Sometimes the burden of being the only intelligent man in town is more than I can bear.”
