Vern Arendt

Ozaukee Press
Inducted: 2001

Setting a standard for excellence in press photography, Vern Arendt, long-time photographer for the Ozaukee Press, has delighted generations of readers with pictorial moments in their lives. His masterful images have won hundreds of first place awards for this paper, both state-wide and nationally.

Consistently over the years, Vern set the standard to which many newspaper photographers nationwide aspired. His beat has always been Ozaukee County, “where the news develops within the slow rhythms of small-town life.” He never depended on high action as a metropolitan daily might have offered. He has enriched his newspaper and community for more than 50 years-week in, week out-with photos capturing local human interest and events with refreshing angles, whether county fairs, Girl Scouts, parades or ground-breaking occasions.

His camera “magic” has produced extraordinary photographs of ordinary events. It has not been unusual for a single issue of the Press to contain 50 or more photographs.

In addition to news photography, Vern has excelled as a nature photographer. Many of his “best” are revealed in the book, “Vern’s Vision.”
