NBC News’ Pete Williams to discuss journalism ethics and covering the U.S. Supreme Court

The University of Wisconsin's Center for Journalism Ethics will host a public event – “Breaking Precedent: Journalism Ethics & Covering the US Supreme Court” – at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, at the Memorial Union Play Circle on the UW–Madison campus. In conversation with Kathleen Bartzen Culver, director of the Center, NBC's Pete Williams will engage in a public discussion of media ethics and the challenges of covering the U.S. Supreme Court in turbulent times.

Submit your Better Newspaper Contest entries by Nov. 2; members encouraged to login early

The deadline to submit entries to the WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest has been extended to Wednesday, Nov. 2. If you have not yet logged into the portal and plan to make entries, we strongly encourage you to do so as soon as possible. A high turnover in contestant managers has prompted several support requests and may prevent staff from being able to respond immediately to member inquiries.

Contestant managers are encouraged to review the contest Rules & Categories and answers to Frequently Asked Questions before submitting entries. Questions should be directed to WNA Membership & Communications Director Julia Hunter.

5 to be inducted into the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame

The deadline to purchase tickets to the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame banquet is Thursday, Nov. 3.

The WNA Foundation will induct the following newspaper leaders during a ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 10, at The Madison Club, 5 E. Wilson St., Madison: Emma Brown (posthumous), The Wisconsin Chief, Fort Atkinson; Dickey Chapelle (posthumous), Shorewood native, photographer and one of the first female war correspondents, killed in Vietnam; Charles "Chuck" Gauger, Trempealeau County Times, Whitehall; Peter Fox, Wisconsin Newspaper Association; and Phil Muench (posthumous), Grant County Herald Independent, Lancaster.

MultiMedia Channels closes Clintonville office

MultiMedia Channels has closed its Clintonville office, the Clintonville Tribune-Gazette reports.

“MMC decided to close the office after evaluating all of our office space in Waupaca County,” Dave Wood, director of Operations and Distribution for MMC said in a story about the closure published Thursday. “COVID impacted how much office space was needed as many employees remained working from home.” The company’s offices in New London and Waupaca will remain open.

Civics Games editorial contest deadline extended until Nov. 14

The deadline for the Wisconsin Civics Games Editorial Writing & Cartoon Contest, presented by the WNA Foundation, has been extended until 11:59 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14. With the extension, winners will now be announced in early January, at which time winning entries will be made available for publication by WNA newspapers.

Thank you to the many members who have published stories and ads to help promote the contest. Any assistance in publicizing the extended deadline would be much appreciated!

Herb Kohl Educational Foundation seeking volunteers

The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation is looking for volunteers to read and evaluate applications for its 2023 Wisconsin student, teacher and principal awards. The Wisconsin Newspaper Association is a longtime sponsor of the program.

Volunteers will need access to a computer and the internet and will need to complete a one-hour online training prior to scoring applications. Applications will be available for scoring from approximately mid-November through mid-December. Interested volunteers should sign up by Saturday, Oct. 29.

Oneida County sheriff to be honored with open government award

Oneida County sheriff Grady Hartman will be honored with the Wisconsin Newspaper Association's inaugural Sunshine in Government award.

The award, launched this year by the WNA Board of Directors, recognizes efforts by Wisconsin citizens and public officials to protect and strengthen open government. It will be presented during the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame Banquet on Thursday, Nov. 10, at The Madison Club in downtown Madison.

UW-Green Bay honors Frank Wood with media center dedication

The Frank Wood Media Newsroom was dedicated Monday at UW-Green Bay’s new media center in honor of the late publisher, reports The (Green Bay) Press Times.

Wood, who was inducted into the Wisconsin Newspaper Hall of Fame in 2002, owned Brown County Publishing, the Green Bay News-Chronicle, and other weekly papers in the area. The newsroom is one of many spaces in the new media center — a $5.7 million renovation that coincides with the rebirth of student-run media at UW-Green Bay.
