She began her career with Monroe Publishing in August 1982 as a secretary and classified order taker. Three years later, she joined the sales team at The Times, and in 2004, she was named advertising manager.

“It’s been a great journey,” Hughes said in the story announcing her retirement. “What’s been nice about this journey is I’ve been able to work and learn in different departments — a lot of different departments. Lots of great people and great mentors. A lot of amazing people that taught me a lot of things. You just keep asking questions and explore. Every day you learn something new. If you just keep moving, you will grow.”

Hughes is a frequent recipient of WNA Better Newspaper Contest awards and played a key role in the The Times winning the state’s Newspaper of the Year in 2018, 2020 and 2021, wrote editor Adam Krebs.

Hughes said she is looking forward to traveling with her husband and spending time with her family. Her last day at the newspaper was Wednesday, Jan. 31.
