Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Star-Observer Entry Title: March 31, 2022; Entry Credit: Cindy Duffee Judge Comment: Excellent use of space. The mermaid article implemented the rule of an odd number of photos and was visually pleasing. The photo and layout of the Feb. 17 page was excellent. Of particular interest was the layout of the mayoral article. Whether intentional or not, the black and white images on the medical examiner photos was compelling.

Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: The Platteville Journal Entry Title: The Platteville Journal Entry Credit: Steve Prestegard Judge Comment: Good photography used on the pages. Less is more in providing an impact. Too many color photos on a page divert the eye in all directions.
For instance in greyhound racing the topic photo could have been more powerful if zoomed in and larger and eliminate the last photo on the page. The photos are more interesting with subjects or people, the photo of the Iowa Greyhound Park wasn't as compelling.
Place Name: Honorable Mention Contestant Name: The Star News Entry Title: August 18, July 14, August 25 Entry Credit: Lydia Erickson Judge Comment: Unique page layout. Reminiscent of a scrapbook-type layout. Less is more with photos. Those containing several people needing to be larger to view.
