Enterprise/Interpretive Reporting ( Division A )Back
Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Green Bay Press-Gazette Entry Title: Addressing the shortage: How Northeastern Wisconsin can solve its affordable housing crisis Entry Credit: Jeff Bollier Judge Comment: This multi-part project is an extremely well-written look at the lack of affordable housing in northeastern Wisconsin, its causes and possible solutions through the eyes of housing-cost burdened individuals. The work of the reporters, the art and graphics all stood out.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Wisconsin State Journal Entry Title: No time to lose: Finding rare diseases in infants Entry Credit: David Wahlberg Judge Comment: Like the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel nine years ago, this series shows the importance of rapid screening of newborns for genetic diseases and the consequences of delay. It also highlights efforts to improve analysis using genome sequencing. Powerful writing. Thoroughly reported.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: The Journal Times Entry Title: Ambulances: The calls keep coming Entry Credit: Rachel Kubik Judge Comment: Strong enterprise reporting about problems affecting EMT services, from staffing shortages to low reimbursement rates to growing senior population. Well-done analysis of an issue affecting everyone who needs emergency services.
Competition Comment: Five or six of the 26 entries were truly competitive. Among those, two were so close in quality, breadth and depth that I had difficulty choosing which should be awarded first place and which second place. Both could claim to be the winner.
