Page Design ( Division A,Division B) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Advance-Titan
    Entry Title: What a mess
    Entry Credit: Cory Sparks
Judge Comment: You received my attention immediately. An impressive photo with the mud and the footprint. I quickly read the cutline and the photo was not a mess, but impressive. The other photo in the story helped. Cutline is fine in the photo, and boxed quote in lower story works okay. Page looks good and I want to read the stories, and the headlines fit well though I would have liked the top story headline to be darker. Clarity is good, had clear reader appeal, and white space fine. Visual elements stand out. Strong check on visual elements.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Clarion
    Entry Title: Arts section
    Entry Credit: Valenzia Cina
Judge Comment: Yes, this is the Arts page, and pardon my pun, and it is resented in a nice, artistic way. The upper half of the page draws my attention to the page, and the different use and size of pictures work well. The headlines show well and are easy to read. The visual elements draw attention, and white spaces are fine. Page shows creativity, originality, and reader appeal is there. Photos work well. I like the page and would be interested in reading the copy.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Advance-Titan
    Entry Title: Vanishing act?
Judge Comment: The visual at the top of the page has a strong reader appeal and makes you read the cutline to find why there are missing parts. Nice idea. However, I am bit distracted by the instructor appearing to be looking a yellow mass and I'm wondering what the mass is. The color in the graphic helps with the illustration. The other box and quote are fine, and the visual elements are good. Headline works well. Yes, the page attracts the reader to read the content.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: The Advance-Titan
Entry Title: Save a kitten this holiday season
    Entry Credit: Katie Pulvermacher
Judge Comment: One need not be a kitten fan to appreciate this page. Kittens are used nicely on the page and draw the reader's attention. The black kitten is a bit dark and doesn't show tip as well as others pictured. Headlines work well and interesting use of white space and creativity of page. Took some thought to put page together.
  • Competition Comment: Thanks for the opportunity of viewing the pages in this competition. It was fun and entertaining to see what was a contrast of pages. Some creativity, originality, and interesting ideas were seen. While I did not see all of the pages in the same way, I did not see any bad pages. In the winning pages, I saw several approaches that nabbed my interest. On the winning page was a creative and interesting photo that really goes with the story. It was not the only photo that stood out. One paper had an awesome photo covering most of the page and it caught the reader’s attention. The second place entry had some contrasting photos and had an artistic look for the arts page. Liked the the placement of missing students in the third place winner. Although I’m not a kitten or cat fan, I did like the kitten page. Several other pages were appealing to me such as the hook, line and sinker, a photo growing out of as basket, the small page, the BIG page, and photos with artistic design. Color worked well in many pages. I thought visual elements and white space helped the pages. The one element I noticed the most were the photos. You had some nice photos and enhanced the pages. Best wishes in your future success.
